Technical Meeting Summary

The 18th Annual Workshop and Exhibition of the Canadian Thermal Analysis Society was held on May 13-14, 2008 at the Stage West Hotel in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

CTAS Annual Workshop and Exhibition included a one-day training session, a one-day technical session and a two-day instrument exhibition. The instrument exhibition was participated by TA Instruments, Mettler-Toledo, Netzsch, Perkin Elmer, Thermal Hazard Technology and Gamble Technologies.

Following four training courses were given in the training session:

  • "An Introduction to Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry" by S. C. Mojumdar of the University of Toronto and the University of New Brunswick
  • "High Heating Rate Thermal Analysis: Demystifying the Myths" by C. Potter of TA Instruments
  • "Adiabatic Calorimetry Data, its Analysis, Interpretation and Application" by H. Dhariwal of Thermal Hazard Technology
  • "DMA: Theory, Applications and its Place in the Thermal Analysis World" by O. Savard of PerkinElmer LAS

Six vendor presentations were given in the Vendor Presentation Session by TA Instruments, Mettler-Toledo, Netzsch, Perkin Elmer, Thermal Hazard Technology and Gamble Technologies.

A plenary lecture entitled "Thermophysical Properties Measurement of Fluids: The Transient Line-Source Technique" was given by Professor Romesh C. Prasad, University of New Brunswick prior to the technical session on the second day.

In the technical session, a total of 17 oral presentations and 15 posters presentations were made. The topics presented covered a variety of techniques and applications of thermal analysis in different fields such as polymer, construction materials, adhesive, pharmaceuticals, protein films, nanomaterials and many other materials.

To recognize the contribution by students in the field of thermal analysis, the CTAS Student Award was presented to Z. S. Ng of the University of Waterloo
